Previs - Frog Zapping Scene

Sometimes you have no idea how your going to do a scene until you just dig in and try it. This particular scene involved a background with 3 different lighting cues, that also has to pulse with lighting to create the backdrop for the surging electric display.

The colour script was painted to increase the feeling of power as the frog zapping seems more and more like it's going to work, until the frog bursts, and the lights come back on.

Here is the base Layout I made, to do all the lighting effects on top of.
First I took the colour keys, and cut them together, trying to see what effects were available to me in After Effects. This includes, creating the cast shadow behind Lloyd as the electricity gets intense.

Once the colour blending technique was solved, I used the real layout, with different lighting passes for blending to create the visual notes I needed. Slugging in the coloured storyboard poses to feel out the layout.

Now all I have to do is animate the scene, and plug it all into AfterEffects, reusing these techniques.

Here's a lean archer lady, cause I got bored of compositing.

Opening Pan

The first scene of my film has a lot going on. There will be rain. There will be lightning. Dissolves, Multiplanes, Character Animation, Cloud movement! All together I believe there is about 14 layers of things that go into the final. Here is just the painted background artwork. Another 20 layouts left to paint!
Sometimes I get bored, and sketch non film things.
Evil Sphinx

Some sort of Beaver-Elephant-Aardvark-Rabbit-Deer. Or B.E.A.R.D for short.

Title Design, and Random Anim

Here is the Opening Title Design for the film. I took the old design, and made it more 3D, and homemade, in a sense.
Yesterday, I didn't feel up to working on film, so I did a rough animation. It's just a straight ahead piece, done without a model sheet.

Judge and Zombie Model Sheets

I worked all hard and stuff, and now I got 2 more model sheets done. I even tackled hands and stuff, which apparently I learned how to draw sometime between last year and now.

Here's Principal Judge. Aka. adult Charlie Brown, or the human incarnation of a Number 2 pencil.
Zombie Dad!
I'll do another crack at Lloyd before the weekend.

Lloyd model sheets and a sketch

Animation begins next week, so model sheets are gonna be important. Here's my process.
First I took the best poses from my storyboards and cut them all together.
Then I drew up some heads and rotations to clarify his design.
Then, I had to check if my model works, so I did a little sequence of Lloyd trying to skip.

This last things just a sketch topic me and a couple friends were doing. The topic was a kid learning to joust.

Thanksgiving Double Feature!

Firstly, the post below this is new too, it's my film designs; exciting! But I had extra goodies, because somehow I'm ahead in film production milestones. So I started learning 3D for fun.
If anyone remembers this character lineup, it's now been cleaned up. Something I promised myself i would do last year.
And now, the chameleon in the top left is becoming a 3D character. I did the presculpt in mudbox, and am working on retopologizing it in maya. So soon enough he'll be real, lol.

but before I did that, I did some practice sculpts. They only take about an hour or 2, so I like to just whip up a character sketch and practice sculpting. This is a bear I designed.
And this is the Judge from my film, which you can check out designs for below.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Soon enough, Co-op will end. Soon enough, school will begin. And soon enough, Dead-Beat Dad (Zombie Dad) will be a film.

Here's where some designs stand today.

Daily Doodles

We got a little time off at work. So I decided to start working on 4th year film. I'm pretty sure Zombie Dad's gonna get made.
So now I get to design a bunch of kids. And the easiest way to do that is turn adults back into children. Here are all my boss's at work.

Good old Rutts

EDIT: Here's some more. I tried to go all in and get the scene lighting with them. Oogway has too much texture, my hand hurts now. If my 4th year film boards look half this good I'd be surprised.

Everyone gets stuck in a rutt sometime. The only thing to do is draw something you know will end up good. These are all just studies from Kung fu panda. Just watching the movie and would pause to sketch. I especially love crane's face at the bottom. I'll probably do some more today.

Hill-ifax

If you're going to live in Halifax, you better love walking. Pedestrians are treated like kings. Traffic will stop for you, even if you only accidentally looked at the road.

Everything is Uphill. Kyle jokes it's the town built by David Bowie. You'll walk uphill for ten minutes, turn around, and have to walk uphill all the way back. The colours here are weird too. I guess because the sky is always grey, all the houses have to be rich purples, and reds, or teals. If I ever get some time off to draw, I'll definetly try to capture more of this unique scenary.

But for now, the hilly slopes, and nearby ocean are cool enough for me.

More animals in clothing

This mighty bear, was so tired of the murky fog, he threw a caber to the sky and hoped to pierce to the mist.

Garbage Bag and Buttered Popcorn

I did what I could with the topic words I got. Don't think I'll be going back to that well of creativity again :P.

I couldn't figure out how to do a projector light coming out the door, but whatever.
